Paper Towels – Effect on the Environment

Paper towels seem like a brilliant invention. What’s more convenient than disposable towels that you don’t have to clean or use again? Just buy new ones and throw the old one away. What we may not think about when using paper towels are the extreme waste that they create, and what their effects on the environment truly are.

Paper towels were first invented as a way for medical facilities to prevent the spread of germs. In the beginning, these disposable products weren’t as popular as they are today, but that changed fast. Paper towels soon were used in households all over America, and the waste started piling up.

The Effects of Paper Towels

Paper towels, like any paper product, are made from trees. That means every time you use a disposable towel, you’re using the inside of a tree to wipe down your counters and surfaces. In your lifetime, you’ll probably use thousands and thousands of rolls, which will is the equivalent of an entire forest. Imagine a local forest that you’ve walked through being completely cut down just for paper towels!

It’s Not Just Trees That Are Being Consumed for Paper Towels

Paper towels use a whole lot more resources than just trees. First, the trees have to be grown to make the product. These might be grown on a farm, or more likely, they’re just cut down. This requires heavy machinery which uses fuel, and man power to get the job done. Those trees must then be transported to a facility to be cleaned and processed. The process will use more resources like oil, and especially water.

Next, the product will be transported to a packaging facility. From there, they will make their way to a warehouse to be distributed, then to the grocery store, then to your home. Imagine the amount of fuel used to transport these trees! This means the less disposable towels and paper products you use, the less trees will be cut down.

Paper Towels in Landfills

Landfills are filled with disposable paper products like diapers, napkins, printer paper, notebooks, tissues, and paper towels. There is no way to recycle or reuse disposable many disposable paper products like sanitary napkins and diapers (not to mention it isn’t sanitary!). What happens to these paper products? Eventually, paper products biodegrade. The amount of time that paper towels take to biodegrade varies, but typically it is about one year. The thicker the towel, the longer it will take to break down into the environment. Perhaps the biggest problem is that the paper isn’t the only thing in paper products, and also that we are using paper towels faster than they can biodegrade into the environment. We’re using our resources faster than we can replace them, and the waste is piling up even faster.

Chemicals in Paper Towels

Paper towels aren’t exactly just trees. To increase absorbency, they’ve been subjected to dioxins and other ingredients (the process isn’t disclosed on the roll of paper towels). They are also bleached to give them their white color. The dangers of chlorine bleach have been well documented. Infants and toddlers are especially vulnerable to the effects of chlorine bleach. To reduce their exposure to these chemicals, limit the use of paper plate and towel usage. Instead, use regular plates, cloth napkins, and products that can be washed and reused.

Why We Need Trees

Trees give us oxygen, and filter our air. Since the Industrial Age, the world has been producing emissions that have been polluting our atmosphere. Trees are one of our only hopes to help clean the air, and we’re cutting them down much faster than we can keep up with replacing them. Trees also help to filter ground soil and water, and provide much needed shade for our homes. Wildlife also depend on trees for their existence. Overuse of trees will result in the extinction of some species, will trickle up to the human species in one way or another. As we face the unwelcome prospect of climate change, it’s essential that we keep as many trees as we can to help reduce emissions and to filter the air that we breathe. The United States is the biggest user of disposable paper products, using 50% more than Europe and 500% more than Latin America. Despite the awareness of disposable paper product consumption, consumption continues to increase, which makes it even more important to spread the word about going reusable.

Packaging Waste

Like most every other product created today, disposable products are wrapped in an outer shell of plastic, increasing their overall wastefulness. The outer wrapper has no use other than to contain the product. After opening the product, it’s thrown away. It cannot be recycled. These thin plastics take thousands of years to photodegrade into the environment. Unlike biodegradable items, this means it will never truly disappear, just become smaller and smaller, and eventually work its way into our waterways and drinking water.

How to Decrease Consumption

To decrease your use of paper towels, try using a reusable towel instead. Wring out the towel and rinse it off as needed, washing the cloth in the washing machine when necessary. You’ll be amazed at how fewer times you’ll be taking out your trash simply by going reusable. It’s a great feeling to have a lighter trash load! If you live in a town that charges per bag of trash, that’s another potential savings for you. For apartment complexes and condos, this could mean stable fees and rents due to the stability of the cost of dumpsters and dumper rentals. In other words, the savings could pass to you.

The Cost Savings of Going Reusable

Going reusable isn’t just great for the environment, it’s great for your wallet. The cost savings quickly add up. The average cost of a package of paper towels is well over $1 per roll. A typical family probably uses a couple of rolls per week, maybe 3-5 even. This can really add up! That’s around $3-5 per week, and many trees per week, too. It’s hard to justify cutting down a few trees per week just to wipe down your counters, isn’t it? By going reusable, you’ll immediately realize the cost savings. As opposed to the disposable variety, reusables can be used again and again. The other benefit of going reusable is that you won’t have to lug around the towels in the grocery store. They take up a lot of room in the grocery cart and the store! Reusables take up a fraction of the space and can be stored right underneath your kitchen sink.

Semi Integrated Versus Fully Integrated Dishwasher: Which Is Best?

I don’t know about you, but a dishwasher is something I couldn’t live without. The main reason is that I just don’t like handling dirty, greasy dishes. I also like the convenience of being able to pop the dirty dishes straight into my dishwasher, out of sight, so the kitchen looks tidy immediately upon finishing a meal.

I’ve renovated a few times over the years, but had never given any real thought to the various styles of dishwasher. I just bought what looked good and fitted in with my budget. It was only recently when I moved into an old house that needed renovating that I became aware that there are two main kinds of dishwasher, semi integrated and fully integrated. Both basically function the same way, with the main difference between them being in the design detail. Aesthetics aside, there are a few other things to take into account when deciding between the two.

Fully Integrated Dishwashers

Just as the name suggests, a fully integrated dishwasher blends in seamlessly with the kitchen cabinets surrounding it. The front of the dishwasher can be left exposed or it can be concealed behind a door to match the rest of the kitchen cabinetry. The control panel, along with the opening, is usually on the top of the door, out of sight. For ease of use and to facilitate opening and closing of the door, a handle can be placed on the front of the dishwasher or cabinet it is housed in. Regardless of whether you opt to leave the front of the dishwasher on display or cover it, with its clean, sleek lines a fully integrated model will enhance the appearance of any kitchen. To my eye it looks especially at home in a modern kitchen when a stainless steel or coloured fascia is used.

Semi Integrated Dishwashers

The control panel on a semi integrated dishwasher is positioned at the upper front of the dishwasher. Because of this, this type of dishwasher can be partially, but not fully concealed behind a cabinet door. To fully conceal it would mean access to the control panel and open/close mechanism would not be possible. Some semi integrated washers come with decorative panels that can be changed around to give the kitchen a different look or customized to match the existing cabinets. Pricing and ease of access to the control panel are things that need to be taken into account when deciding upon which type of dishwasher will be right for you.

Which Dishwasher Is Right for You?

Families with young children might prefer a fully integrated dishwasher as the controls will be out of the kids’ reach.

Those who like to know which part of the wash cycle the machine has reached may prefer a semi integrated dishwasher as this information can easily be seen without needing to open the dishwasher’s door.

As for cost, I found that generally fully integrated models cost more than their semi integrated counterparts. This does, however, vary depending upon the make and model meaning a more standard fully integrated washer can come in cheaper than a semi integrated washer that has all the bells and whistles.

Breed Success in Your Puppy Search

The numbers will make any pet lover blanch with disgust, anger, and sadness. The Humane Society of the United States calculates that as many as 500,000 puppies every year are sold in pet shops, and that many of these pet shops buy their pets from the worst breeders–so-called puppy mills. What do these puppy mills (and kitty mills) have to do with you if you’re on the market for a new furry companion? You know what you’re doing when it comes to buying a purebred, right?

Truth be told, puppy mills are largely responsible for even harsher statistic: as many as 25 percent of all purebred pups suffer from genetic difficulties because of bad breeding. And as knowledgeable as you think you are about buying a dog, you could come across one of these poor pups and not even know it.

That could mean that you spent hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars on a pet, only to have it succumb to a birth defect and maybe even die at an early age. Even if this worst-case scenario doesn’t occur, buying from the wrong breeder can also land you an animal that picked up diseases because of the intolerable conditions at the breeder. That could lead to additional thousands spent on vet bills.

Why leash yourself to such heartache? There’s no need when there are so many great and trustworthy breeders out there, who can pair you with a loving new puppy.

To find the right breeder for you, start local. Your best bet is to find breeders within driving distance. That way, you can visit the actual breeding facilities. And while there, be sure to scout out for the following characteristics that all best-of-show breeders possess:

o A litter of dogs that play, smile, and show all the other signs of being happy and healthy. Take notice, too, that the pups are sociable to the breeder, you, and their brothers and sisters.

o More demand for their dogs than they can handle. Usually a long buyers’ waiting list at a breeder is like a wagging tail on a puppy–a good sign.

o A discerning eye for customers. Good breeders should ask you as many questions as you ask them, on topics such as your reasons for wanting their dog, your past pet experience, whether you have enough space at home, and who in your family will be responsible for daily puppy care.

o The willingness to show you the puppy’s parents during your visit if you provide the right answers to the above questions.

o A wealth of knowledge on the dogs that they breed, including specific advice on the breed’s standard and temperament, to satisfy all of your questions and concerns.

o A health guarantee in writing that shows exactly what vaccinations the pup has had.

o The friendly advice about what future vaccinations you should give, along with the best ways to train and care for the puppy.

o A guarantee, again in writing, this one stating that the breeder would be willing to take back the dog if you cannot keep it at any time.

o The care and thoughtfulness to keep in touch for some time after your purchase, to check on the dog and offer further advice when needed.

If you keep your eyes peeled and your ears perked for these signs of a good breeder, you won’t have to rely on luck or a good reference in finding the right puppy (though those don’t hurt either). You’ll learn soon after you bring your new pal home that you made the right choice, and over time, your family and pet bond. Your pet will live a long, healthy life as part of your family.

Swallow Tattoos Vs Sparrow Tattoos – Do You Know the Difference

Many people get swallow tattoos and sparrow tattoos mixed up. If you associate sparrow tattoos with a sailor he may get very upset with you. Many people use them interchangeably but there is a big difference. The majority of the bird tattoos that you see are swallows although many people call them sparrows. Learn the difference before getting the tattoo.

The birds themselves are very different. A swallow is a very common species. It has a beautiful blue color, with a long forked tail and curved, pointed wings. Sparrows are small, plump brown-grey birds with short wings. These are very different birds to be confused so easily. You very rarely see true sparrow tattoos.

If you do see sparrow tattoos, they are usually expressing some type of religious reference. Paraphrasing Matthew 10:29-31, Do not two sparrows sell for little value? Yet not one will fall to the ground without our Father’s knowledge…. Therefore have no fear. Ye are of more value than many sparrows.

On the other hand, swallow tattoos are very popular. These are the birds connected to sailors. Swallows tend to stay close to land so when a sailor would see a swallow, he knew that land was close. Another trait of the swallow is to return to the same mating place year after year. Sailors felt swallow tattoos were a charm to make sure they returned back home safely.

Swallow tattoos were also a sign of how seasoned a sailor was. New sailors would get their first tattoo after 5,000 miles at sea, then another after the next 5,000 miles. After that nautical star tattoos were used.

Because of the beautiful color of the swallow, there are many options when creating a design. A tattoo must be personal to be worthwhile. When you show your tattoo, you want to be able to tell a story. When designing your swallow tattoos, think about what makes it special to you. If you use your imagination you can make the tattoo express your feelings.

The best place to get great ideas on how to make your tattoo special is an online tattoo gallery. With membership to a good gallery you have unlimited access to thousands of high quality, professional designs that will make your tattoo stand above the rest. You can download as many designs as you want for no additional charge. Then you can take your time and put together a tattoo you will cherish for life.

Advantages of Ergonomic Keyboards

Ergonomic keyboards are specially designed computer keyboards with an aim to reduce stress on your wrists and forearms while typing. They have been around for quite some time now, and its been proven that the special contour designs of these keyboards are definitely worth the trouble.

A common ergonomic keyboard design is one where the keyboards seems to be split in half, and each half is positioned on an angle to match the shape of your wrists when typing.

If you use a computer frequently, and especially if you do a lot of typing, you’ll want to make sure you are comfortable with your keyboard. And so, buying an ergonomic computer keyboard would be a great investment for you. You’ll save your hands, forearms and wrists from discomfort, making you more productive and allowing you to work for longer periods of time.

Also, if you’ve ever experienced pain in your hands, wrists or forearms associated with using your keyboard in the past, you will want to consider dumping your old keyboard and buying an ergonomic one to save you from the pain.

If your use of the computer doesn’t include extensive keyboard work, you might not see the full benefits from an ergonomic keyboard. Although, I would still recommend an ergonomic keyboard for all computer users, it’s better to be safe than sorry.

Buying an ergonomic keyboard is a great investment that will save you in the long run.

What Is Interior Design and How Is It Different From Interior Decorating?

To begin this journey, first an attempt must be made to answer the question, ‘What is Interior Design’; The National Council for Interior Design Qualification offers up the following definition: ‘is a multi-faceted profession in which creative and technical solutions are applied within a structure to achieve a built interior environment. These solutions are functional, enhance the quality of life and culture of the occupants and are aesthetically attractive’. Comparing this to the definitions provided by The Free Dictionary for an interior decorator: ‘also called interior designer a person whose profession is the planning of the decoration and furnishings of the interior of houses, shops, etc.’ and ‘a person whose profession is the painting and wallpapering of houses’

Well it is understandable, based on the two definitions above, why there are two camps. One camp holds that the interior designer is held to a higher standard and has significantly more training and design responsibilities than the interior decorator, and then there are those that bunch them all together as one and the same. There are those that look at the designer as a version of an architect and those that look at them as being a house painter. No wonder there is confusion amongst the ranks.

In an attempt to answer the question, ‘Is there a difference or not?’, a Google search was performed for ‘Interior Decorator Degree’ and the response overwhelmingly returned results for ‘Interior Designer’; and not the keyword as searched. One can reasonably conclude that since one can get a degree in interior design, but not as an interior decorator, that there is a difference.

So where would one draw the line between a designer and a decorator? Reverting back to the two definitions above one can discern the key difference. The definition for the designer refers to ‘built interior environment’ whereas the decorator suggests ‘decorating and furnishing’ as the key activities. The higher standard is the designer’s ability and responsibilities to call for tearing out walls, flooring, windows, lighting, electrical, as well as recommending furniture and miscellaneous design pieces. In short, the scope their role includes the responsibilities of a decorator, but goes much further.

Often it is critical for the designer to understand the wants and needs of the individual or company leadership that is hiring them to make a space comfortable and esthetically pleasing to ‘the eye of the beholder’; meaning whoever is paying the freight. This will require the designer to ask the question, ‘What is interior design through the eyes of my employer?’

Determining just how to customize a small dwelling area up to major corporate businesses like a national restaurant chain that must be attractive to the eye in many different regions of the country with a common design can be very challenging. Requiring a grasp of many different fields including developing and reading floor plans, a knowledge of building codes, and access to a long list of contractors that are capable of doing the work to specification are just a few of the extra requirement that separate interior design from decoration.

Often specializing in unique areas like hotels, casinos, restaurants, or other businesses that may regularly freshen up their designs to keep their businesses looking comfortable yet enticing, designers generally develop skill sets that may not play all that well outside of their special areas of expertise. What they probably are looking for in the interior design of a hospital is most likely a far cry from what they are looking for at a casino. Perhaps a better example would be determining just how to continue on with a southwestern theme for a Mexican restaurant chain in places like Seattle, St. Louis, Charlotte, Pittsburg, and Boston. What is interior design widely accepted in one region may not be well accepted in another.

In asking, ‘What is interior design?’ in today’s environment, one must also begin to start thinking green and to look for ways to minimize the consumption of non-renewable energy sources. How does one create areas with a lot of natural lighting but not subject the individual to the blazing rays of the sun? How does one incorporate solar panels into the design or solar powered floor heaters in colder climates without losing the esthetic charm and ambiance of marble floors? These are the challenges of today’s designers. It’s a good thing that they love their jobs.

4 Secrets to Speed Up Bone Healing

Have you ever broken an arm, foot, leg, wrist or any part of your body before? Or are you still currently healing from a broken bone? If you have, then you would want to speed up the healing of your fractured bone.

Bone fractures tend to fully heal up approximately 4 to 8 weeks depending on the location and severity of the fracture. This is a long time for bones to heal and it could be very disabling and limiting to the person. For instance, if you have a broken foot, you are not able to weight bear on your foot and hence unable to walk until the bone in your foot has fully healed. Therefore, it is important that your bones heal as fast as possible so you can regain normal function.

Here are 4 simple but effective ways to increase bone healing.

1. Drink green tea

Green tea contains many anti-oxidants, anti cancer and healing properties. It has been used in traditional chinese medicine for centuries and is commonly used for healing fractures. All you need to do is drink at least 5 cups of green tea to help stimulate and increase bone healing!

2. Massage the soft tissue around your broken bone

If you massage the soft tissue and even your bone around your broken bone, you can heal up your fracture very fast. This is because when you massage, you increase the blood flow and circulation to the point of injury. When you increase the blood flow and circulation to the fracture point, you increase the flow of nutrients and healing factors to the fracture site. This will significantly improve repairing and recovery of the broken bone.

3. Apply heat

Applying heat or warmth to the area of fracture is a great way to help bone repairing. Warmth or heat helps increase blood circulation to the fracture. All you need to do is apply heat to the fracture area for 30 minutes, three times a day. You can apply heat by soaking your fracture in a hot bath, use a hot water or wheat bag or even covering your broken limb with warm clothes!

4. Increase muscle strength around the fracture area

If you have a broken bone, it is important that you exercise and increase the muscle strength around the fracture area. This is because when you fracture a bone, the muscles around the fracture tend to waste away and hence will take you longer for recovery. So exercise every muscle around your fracture if possible.

How to Pick Out the Right Kart Seat For Karting

You’ve decided you either want a new kart seat, or your new and you just need one to race. There are many factors to consider when choosing.

Seat placement

Generally on a straight kart it will be placed in the center of the kart. On an offset kart for oval racing it usually is placed farther left.

Types

There are some different styles and materials that they are made out of and it’s not too large of a collection, so it makes your choice easier. Here are the main ones you will see:

Fiberglass Kart Seats

Fiberglass is usually the choice of most racers. It has a nice finish, and is strong to a point. Fiberglass are popular for the same reasons fiberglass bodies are. They are easy to patch up if they crack a little bit. They also come out with a good finish when painted. It is a strong lightweight material.

Plastic

Plastic bends but doesn’t break, but when they do break, you can’t really fix it. This is probably the 2nd mots popular type but still not that close to the fiberglass ones.

Carbon Fiber

These are the most expensive and the highest quality, as well as the lightest. If you have the money it is a good investment. If you have ever seen carbon fiber it has a unique look to it, like it’s woven together. This is a strong material as well, but rarely seen in karting.

Kart Racing Seat Designs

When picking a seat, you have different design choices to pick from. Here are some:

Lay down Seats

These are the choice for most racers. It has the least wind resistance, and most feel it’s more comfortable. The only downside is for shorter people and seeing over the steering wheel.

Upright Seats

These are the original seats in karting, and are just more upright than the lay down seats.

Sizes

The best way to really check for your size is to sit in a seat. But if you want to get a rough estimate, they come in mostly general sizes like, extra small, small, medium, large and extra large.

Padding

There is padding out there you can buy specifically for kart seats, but most people find it best just to add their own, using anything from duct tape to foam.

What All Small Business Websites Require

If you have a small business and you want to advertise on the Web, it can be extremely tempting to just run out and make a website. This can be a big mistake, however. Sites for small businesses require different things than personal sites, academic sites or other types of Web presence. If you don’t pay attention to the special characteristics of your business, you could run into trouble. Let’s take a look at some of the things that your site requires.

Site Description

Any business site needs to get to the point quickly. Include a description of your business and what your site does where your visitors can see it easily. This doesn’t need to be long or complex, but it does need to be obvious and accessible. If your readers aren’t sure how the site works, they won’t stay to find out. Make sure your description includes a good way to contact you, as well.

Sensible Address

Competition for Web addresses can make it hard to get the URL you like best. That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t work to find a short, easily-understood one, however. Make sure that the Web address you pick makes sense, isn’t hard to spell, and won’t confuse potential visitors. There’s nothing worse than accidentally sending traffic to the competition because your customers can’t remember your website address.

Site Map

A good business website will actually have two site maps: one for visitors and one for the search engines. Both serve the same purpose: to get people to your pages quickly and efficiently. The search engine site map must be built using XML and requires special formatting. The one for visitors can be set up however you like; just make sure that it’s easy to read and understand.

Quality Content

There are lots of tips and tricks for bringing in traffic, but one of the most important is to have high quality content. That means taking the time to look at what you’ve written, hiring a professional writer if necessary, and avoiding the temptation to duplicate content that can be found somewhere else. A flashy design might bring viewers in, but quality content is what keeps them from leaving.

Friendly Design

If you make a website, you should also pay careful attention to page design. It’s important to look for something that does more than just look good. You also need to think about your prospective audience and the features that will attract them. For instance, if you’re building a page that needs to look fresh and interesting for people with a lot of computer experience, the latest multimedia extras may be important. If your audience is mostly older or contains people who have disabilities, you may need to forgo animations and other flashy elements in favor of a site that’s very easy to navigate.
